Countdown to iPhone 18 launch: What to expect…

Social media platforms have been going crazy this summer ahead of the much-anticipated launch of the iPhone 18. In this article, we cover the latest rumours and what we definitely know so far…
The iPhone has been a global success story since its 2007 launch event hosted by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Put simply, the iPhone started the smartphone era, offering a touchscreen, internet connection and access to the iTunes music app. Continuous evolution means the iPhone remains the world’s favourite mobile phone with annual sales of approximately 240 million units.
When is the iPhone 18 launch?
For more than a decade, Apple has launched its entire flagship iPhone range in September. However, many industry insiders suggest Apple will split its releases in 2026 and spring 2027.
September 2026 could be one of the biggest iPhone launches in years, with the expected unveiling of the premium iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max alongside its long-awaited foldable iPhone.
Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 is rumoured to be delayed until spring 2027, marking a significant change to Apple’s usual release schedule. The strategy would allow Apple to focus attention on its premium devices while giving the standard models their own launch window several months later.
While Apple has yet to confirm anything officially, there are plenty of rumours flying around about the new devices…
The arrival of the iPhone Fold
Perhaps the biggest talking point is Apple’s first foldable smartphone. Rumoured to be called the iPhone Fold, it is expected to feature a book-style design, opening from a standard-sized smartphone into a tablet-sized display measuring around 7.8 inches. When folded, reports suggest the outer display could measure approximately 5.5 inches.
Apple has watched competitors such as Samsung, Google and Huawei develop foldable phones over recent years. Many analysts believe Apple has deliberately waited until the technology matured before entering the market.
As always with Apple, the focus is expected to be on durability, software optimisation and a premium user experience rather than simply being first.
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max upgrades
While the overall design may look familiar, several meaningful upgrades are rumoured for the Pro models. One of the biggest changes could be a smaller Dynamic Island, made possible by relocating more Face ID components beneath the display. Reports also suggest Apple is testing a variable aperture main camera, allowing users to capture better photographs in different lighting conditions.
Inside, the Pro models are expected to debut Apple’s new A20 Pro processor, manufactured using an advanced 2-nanometre process. This should deliver faster performance while improving battery life.
Other rumours include an upgraded Apple-designed C2 modem for faster connectivity and enhanced AI performance throughout iOS.
What about the standard iPhone 18?
Those waiting for Apple’s more affordable flagship may need more patience. Current rumours suggest the standard iPhone 18 won’t arrive until spring 2027, potentially alongside the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air. While fewer details have emerged, it’s expected to retain a familiar design while benefiting from many of the performance improvements introduced by the new A20 chip.
For consumers, it could mean choosing between paying more for the latest technology in autumn or waiting a few extra months for the standard models.
Could iPhone prices increase?
Several reports suggest Apple may increase prices for the Pro models, particularly as they incorporate more advanced hardware and launch alongside the premium iPhone Fold. The foldable device itself is expected to command a significantly higher price than any previous iPhone, reflecting the complexity of its design.
